It seems that as time goes on I want to move further away from the digital world. This is completely contradictory to the career I have chosen, and another one of my favorite hobbies of homelabbing. It started last year when I started taking some short daily notes in a small notebook that I sometimes carried with me, and then I followed that up with getting into film photography as it got into summer. Almost a year later I am looking into bullet journaling, still taking film photos, and finding more and more reasons to separate myself from the digital world.
I am also the same person who enjoys a good Apple ecosystem, loves looking at data, and setting up systems that work automatically, but maybe it is the pursuit of self-sufficiency or rather self-reliance that draws me away from those things and back to the basics.
A few days ago I began, but in a soft launch kind of way. I am so engrained in the digital world that I am sure I would miss things if I cut ties like a cold turkey.
Here are the things that I have started with as apart of my Analog Life
- Field Notes added to my EDC
- Daily Tasks, random thoughts and notes
- Always carrying a camera with me
- I’d love for everything to be film, but I don’t have a camera for every situation (lighting is the main challenge), so I have an old school digital camera thrown in the mix as well.
- Larger Notebook for organized notes and trackers
Digital Items/Habits that I am currently using, but would like alternatives for
- Run/fitness mileage tracking
- I currently have an apple watch that works fine, but I feel too connected. I’d like a way to track runs and tell me the time, that is all I need (I think?)
- Books
- About 2 years ago I decided to buy and stick with the iBooks ecosystem. I’m not opposed to buying real books, but I have a ton of digital ones still left to read so maybe after I wrap these up I’ll be able to move away from these
- Phone
- I honestly think I’ll always have an iPhone, the ecosystem and convenience is just too good. There are tons of apps that I’d like to completely delete off of there, that will take some time to migrate from.
- I really want to boil my phone down to what hardware it offers, a phone and a camera. If I could simplify it to be a communication device and camera then I think I would be okay with considering that apart of my analog system. There is a reason they are so popular, they are just too good of a tool to completely throw to the side, plus….blue bubble for life.
